Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together!

And they do! We had lunch Sunday at Gladys and Ron's Chicken and Waffles. http://gladysandron.net/
We expected crowds, but walked right in. Service was snappy, and the food was great. Pictured here is the Midnight Train: A single delicious waffle and four fried chicken wings.
By the way, these are by far the largest chicken wings I've ever seen. Enourmous. Mind you, these are dredged, not battered. For my money, that's the more traditional method of prep for southern style fried chicken.
For the uninitiated, that means that the chicken is moistened with something, usually egg, then dredged through a spiced flour mixture. Battered fried chicken is just that: dipped in a liquid batter, usually butter milk based.
So yes, the food was pretty good, but the real attraction was the price. Three of us left stuffed for about thirty bucks. Pretty good stuff. Best of all, we never got that "What the hell are these people doing here?" look that us suburbanites sometimes get in Atlanta.
It's worth mentioning that this was a fairly decent looking restaraunt, not what you might expect from a place that specializes in waffles and fried chicken. The walls are decked out with souvenirs and memorabilia from various Motown and soul recording artists, with Gladys' own music playing over the sound system.
The other hilight of the weekend was a trip to Ikea. Even if you don't care for Swedish furniture, it's worth a look. Quite a cosmopolitan crowd there. I personally love the stuff, but it's very much in the European style, meaning small and angular. Also, cheap, but of pretty good quality none the less.
The most interesting thing about the place is on your way out, past the check out. They have a little grocery nook, where you can buy Authentic Swedish Food Stuffs, like smoked fish, elderberry flower drink, and lingonberry jam. I did promise you lingonberries, did I not?
And of course, last weekend was the recovery period for WINTER STORM 2010! Which turned out to be pretty tame. No serious problems, with the exception of an eensy bit of overpass that GA DOT "forgot" to salt. And it only took a twentyseven car pile-up to catch their attention.
And that's it. A pretty good weekend, all in all. I'll save my football rant for another time.
So, what did you do last weekend?

A Case of Mondays

Or perhaps I just spent an hour on a forklift in a 13 degree warehouse. Either way, my fingers don't work so good right now. Once I thaw out, I'll spill the beans about my Interesting Weekend. You won't want to miss it. There's Gladys Knight, lingonberries, and the WINTER STORM that wasn't.

Busy Busy Bee

So. Busy today. In the meantime, entertain yourself with the further adventures of your favorite sloth, The Sloth.
FYI, this one is kind of PG-13, so tell the kids to look away after the boob machine gets fixed.

Fiddlery

That's right. I'm fiddling. In the meantime, meet The Sloth.

Man. That's Cold.

And it is cold. I'm sure anyone from the northeast would be thoroughly unimpressed, but highs in Atlanta over the next few days are going to be in the mid 30's, and have been since Saturday. For Atlanta, that's positively frigid. The local weather knob says that we haven't had a sustained cold snap like this since '84. I've only been here since '97, but even out-of-towners like me are bundling up this week. Worst of all, some forecasters have even mentioned the "S" word.

That's right. Snow.

For those of you not versed in the local culture, the merest suggestion of the white stuff (I won't say the word again) will send hordes of people swarming to their hardware and grocery stores for milk, bread, kerosene heaters and generators. My wife says they need their milk sandwiches.
I don't really get it. Granted, when it does um..precipitate frozen water, there tends to be a good bit of ice along with it, and local DOT doesn't have the equipment to deal with it. Why bother? We only get measurable accumulation every three years or so, and it's always gone within a day. The roads certainly don't stay closed long enough for anyone to starve, but folks down here are petrified of getting sn- um...iced in.

So, you heard it here first. Thursday night is the projected arrival time for the Alberta Clipper that's supposed to bring us a winter wonder land. That means you've got plenty of time to get to Home Depot for space heaters and generators. Oh, and don't forget to stock up for milk sandwiches.

It's The Grand Opening!

Insert here the obligatory "Welcome to my piece of the web" first blog entry.
This is my personal scratching post/litter box/billboard/graffiti wall/soap box. This is where I will astound you all with my witty wisdom and rye observations. Or just prattle on about whatever happens to be stuck in my mental lint trap.
